What is drug addiction?

Drug addiction, also called substance use disorder (SUD), is a chronic but treatable condition that affects the brain and behaviour.

It develops when repeated substance use alters the brain’s reward and stress systems, creating powerful cravings and making it increasingly difficult to stop.

Over time, people may become dependent on prescription or illicit drugs to cope, relax, or feel normal. Addiction affects physical health, emotions, and relationships — but with the right treatment and support, long-term recovery is achievable.

When does drug use become a problem?

It isn’t always easy to recognise when occasional use has turned into dependence. Common warning signs of problematic substance abuse include

  • Using more of the substance than you intended
  • Needing higher or more frequent doses to get the same effect
  • Spending much of your time obtaining, using, or recovering from drugs
  • Neglecting work, studies, or family responsibilities
  • Continuing to use despite health, financial, or relationship problems
  • Experiencing cravings, irritability, or anxiety when not using
  • Trying to stop but being unable to on your own

If several of these signs sound familiar, confidential help is available. First Step can guide you toward an accredited facility for assessment and treatment.

Rehab for drugs

Rehab for drug addiction offers a structured and supportive setting where individuals can begin their recovery with professional guidance. It’s designed to help you break free from substance dependence, manage withdrawal safely, and work through the deeper issues that drive addiction.

Most rehab centres begin with a medical assessment and, where necessary, a supervised detox process. This is followed by individual and group therapy, educational sessions, and support services that equip clients with the tools to rebuild their lives and prevent relapse.

At First Step, we help connect you with trusted drug rehab centres across South Africa. Whether you need inpatient treatment, outpatient support, or a personalised referral, our team is here to guide you toward the right care for your needs.

Types of drug rehabs

Different people benefit from different levels of support:

Inpatient rehab

Provides 24-hour medical and therapeutic care in a
residential setting.

Outpatient rehab

Allows you to live at home while attending scheduled
addiction therapy sessions

Private vs public facilities

Private rehab centres usually offer shorter waiting times, smaller groups, and more personalised care, while public services may provide affordable or subsidised options.

Choosing the right rehabilitation centre for drug addiction

Selecting a treatment facility can be difficult, but there are key factors to consider

  • Accreditation and professional standards
  • Qualified multidisciplinary staff
  • Individualised treatment planning
  • Access to psychiatric or dual-diagnosis care
  • Aftercare and relapse-prevention support

First Step helps by assessing your needs and connecting you with a drug rehab centre that offers the right level of care and support.

Medical aid cover for drug addiction rehab

All medical aid schemes registered in South Africa are legally obligated to cover rehab for substance abuse — as well as certain psychiatric conditions — under government-mandated prescribed minimum benefits (PMBs).

Most South African medical aids cover drug addiction treatment under hospitalisation or mental-health benefits.

However, some medical aids may require that you use a drug rehab facility from their designated service provider list and only may cover a percentage of the cost of rehab (usually 70–80%).

In such cases, or in cases where the rehab facility doesn’t bill for services at scheme rates, you may be charged a co-payment.

First Step can help you verify your medical aid cover, find a rehab without co-payments, and guide you through the pre-authorisation process to ensure you don’t have to pay for your addiction treatment out of pocket.
